I am sure I am not the only one to be disturbed by the recent trend for seeing little girls in age inappropriate clothing like cropped tops.  There are even ranges of clothing produced by companies that are more often associated with adult entertainment aimed at girls that have yet to reach puberty.  I read an article in a national daily newspaper that said that some major supermarkets are even producing bikinis and stripper themed outfits for children no older than toddlers.  But there is something about cropped tops that to me sums up this incursion into childhood innocence.

Flip flops originate from Japan but the name is obviously not a Japanese one.  They are a traditional shoe worn by geishas (usually constructed of a hard material like wood) whilst retaining that ever so familiar “Y” shape to hold it in place on the foot.  The origin of the name is somewhat less certain.  Some people refer to it as describing the sound that the ubiquitous rubber soled version makes when the wearer walks (they have also been described as flip flaps) whereas some people say it originates in the fact that the shoes cause bad posture and hence the wearer tends to lollop (or flip flop) along in an overly casual manner.

Typically flip flops have been poorly and cheaply constructed which has led to them being treated as disposable – designed to last for a single two week holiday on the beach before being discarded, only to be replaced with an identical pair the following year.  Certainly your average cobbler would be somewhat bemused if you went to the trouble of taking a pair in to be mended; they would hardly seem to be worth the bother, particularly when it is probably much cheaper to simply replace the whole unit with a brand new pair.  This of course is not the situation in the third world where flip flops for many, particularly in hot, dusty countries are the footwear of choice, being easy to clean, practical and – most importantly – extremely cheap.

But in recent years, these disposable flip flops have come within the radar of fashionistas and it is possible to find many examples of them (known as “thongs” to our Australian cousins) costing upwards of several hundred pounds and decorated with jewels, silk flowers and all many of other expensive decorations.  Flip flops, it seems, are no longer to be sneered at.

To me the word vest has to be one of the silliest and most delightful words in the English language.  It conjures up images of childhood and protestations against my mother’s insistence on wearing one under just about everything I wore during that period of my life.  This most ungainly of garments defies all attempts at reinvention.  It must remain a plain and functional undergarment, always a little suspect and old-fashioned.

There is also something of the post war years about the vest.  Thinking now, it conjures up images of Blackpool and Scarborough and middle aged fathers wearing knotted headscarves as protection against the sun, even though it remains obscured for most of the day behind clouds.  Our beaches bear little resemblance to those of the Riviera with their lithe, tanned French and Italian bodies smouldering in the sultry heat.  No, we must content ourselves with pink and white bodies peeping out from behind long underpants and a vest.

Even now there is something faintly ridiculous about the vest.  Whenever a vaguely risqué scene comes on the television and my parents happen to be present, my mother always manages to diffuse the awkwardness of the situation by exclaiming “oh no, he’s going to show his vest!” knowing full well that the Hollywood idea of male attire is a world away from anything as mundane as that.  Even so, it is guaranteed to raise a giggle.

But I feel I must speak in defence of the vest.  I am now past my first flush of youth and I find that one of the scenes of ageing is a greater desire to be comfortable, literally, in the clothes I stand in and on a bitterly cold winter’s night I warmly recall the pleas of my mother to not go out without my vest and I think of heading for a clothes store straightaway to set matters right.
