The most surprising of garments to have made a comeback recently are vests. Not the tank top as an American would be more familiar associating the word with, but the simple undergarment for keeping you warm in chilly weather. The revitalisation of this item of clothing might well be down to the resurgence of practicality and economising as part of the global assault on climate change.
We are all being urged to take small steps in our everyday lives to chip away at our carbon footprint in as many small ways as we can in the belief – and hope – that all those small measures added together will add up into one big difference in our energy consumption and one immediate and effective thing we can do is to wear extra layers of clothing – like vests – under our normal clothes. But you might say that can’t possibly make that much difference overall. But the goal being aimed for is not to take you from living in a home heated to the same temperature as the trips to living in a frigid box colder than the inside of the fridge. No, the changes aimed for are more subtle than that. By wearing vests under our jumpers or shirts, we will be tempted into turning the thermostat in our homes and offices a crucial couple of degrees and if we all do that then this would have an impact on nationwide consumption of fossil fuels in the order of whole percentage points. All through us choosing to wear vests! If carrying out small actions like that can easily lead to massive changes on a global scale, then just think what we can achieve if we apply changes like this throughout all areas of our lives.
So I only have one thing left to add and that is keep wearing those vests!
